The medication employed during the treatment of anxiety disorder is usually psychoactive. Psychoactive medication acts on the brain directly by exerting control over brain cells or by managing the chemical levels in brain. The medication which is generally prescribed to treat anxiety disorder includes:

1. Benzodiazepines
2. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
3. Antidepressants like Sertraline
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines (like Diazepam) are one of the most widely recommended psychoactive drugs to treat anxiety disorders. Benzodiazepines are sedative in nature and are minor tranquillizers which are used to treat anxiety. It works by slowing down the activity in cortex and Central Nervous System. Diazepam is available in the market under with brand name Valium.
